23.00 - 00.00 Freedoms Trio (World Jazz ) Norway, Brasil, Mozambique

Steinar Aadnekvam, born in Bergen - Norway 1984, is one of the most proficient and talked about young guitarists on the Scandinavian jazz scene.

Born into a family of travelling merchants, he got his first guitar at the age of 4 and soon found it would be a dear friend at lonely hours while growing up in towns and cities across Norway, Denmark, Italy, Luxembourg and Sweden - rarely staying more than 6 months in each new place.

The guitar turned out to be young Steinar's prime, if not only, interest, and by the age of 9 he was composing on a daily basis while listening to artists like Elvis Presley, Prince and Michael Jackson. In his teens his interest turned to Jazz when discovering artists like Charlie Parker, John McLaughlin, Miles Davis, Rhasaan Roland Kirk, Abdullah Ibrahim and later composers like Egberto Gismonti, Hermeto Pascoal and of course Indian classical music and so on...

After studies at Södra Latins Gymnasium and consequently the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden, with notable teachers at this time including Mikke Rönnkvist, Thomas Wixtröm, Andreas Oberg, Alvaro Is Rojas and Sten Hostfalt, Steinars curiosity turned outwards as he decided to "leave all behind" and travel to Mumbai - India for studies with classical indian master flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia at his intern school Vrindaban Gurukul. Soon after fate would also have him make his first travel to north- eastern Brasil, an acquaintance that made an even deeper impact on him and for almost a decade he now finds his second home in the state of Pernambuco where two of his albums have been recorded collaborating with some of the regions finest musicians.

After nominations in 2009 for the 'Young Nordic Guitarist Award' by the Uppsala Int. Guitar Festival, and in 2010 finalist at the 'Norsk JazzIntro' at Molde Jazz Festival Steinar launched his own label 'MMYH Records / Music Makes You Happy' with his 2010 debut release 'Simple Things'. The album was immediately embraced by audience and critics alike and on the very day of it's release the Swedish newspaper 'Dalademokraten' wrote "The guitar jazz album of the year! A great new guitarist has presented himself." while the capital newspaper Dagens Nyheter put the release right on it's cover.

In the following years Steinar played feature concerts at clubs and major jazz festivals in Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Latvia, Poland and Romania and later turned to working on his two Brasilian album collaborations 'Abacaxeiro' and 'Ecology' and extensive concert touring, masterclasses, TV and Radio appearances related to these in the Nordics and in Brasil.
In 2015 Steinar teamed up with Norwegian label Losen Records for his fourth studio album, his grand project 'Freedoms Tree' featuring an international all-star ensemble including several outstanding musical guests. The album turned out to be a great success and the full 7 piece ensemble will present a concert at the 2016 Stavanger International Jazz Festival / Mai Jazz.
In 2016 the collaboration with Losen Records continues with the release of Steinar's new collaboration and working band - FREEDOMS TRIO.

This new touring band features top contemporary collegues bassist/vocalist Rubem Farias from Salvador da Bahia, Brasil and drummer/singer Deodato Siquir from Maputo,
Mozambique. The group has already had considerable success on the international stage and we are looking forward to inspiring the world in the coming years...

21.00 - 22.00 - Feridah Rose (Soul) Uganda/DK/GH

Danish Afro o-Soul singer Feridah Rose is raising her voice and making a mark with a funky sound, grown om deep roots in East Africa’s red soil, as well as musical input om gospel and reggae.

Feridah Rose has just released her new EP ‘Njabala’ and her music is the sound of love, soul and hot African sun. Based in Copenhagen and carrying strong music traditions from Uganda, the charismatic singer has found form and a personal expression for her music.

When on stage with her band, Feridah Rose combines the beauty of her afro-soul vocal style with a focus on intense rhythmic propulsion and expansive jazz-funk arrangements. Surrounded by a 8 piece band of accomplished musicians and backing singers, it is a show that draws the audience and listener in, with songs that go from deep R&B ballads to the skank of dub reggae and the traditional rhythms of Africa.

The talented band brings an orchestral quality to the arrangements with Jamil Oskarson on bass, Jens Stoklund Jensen on drums, Søren Heller on guitar and Lasse Storgaard on the keys. Backing voicals from Nanna Nabila, Lucas King and ora W. Kruse merge into the music. Last but not least is high energy percussion delivered by Ayi Solomon from Ghana.

At concerts, the band is a charming and vivid acquaintance, who has set out to give their audience an uplifting musical experience: “One of the best experiences I’ve had with a concert, was in the north-west of Denmark last year. The audience were mainly locals, but also a group of refugees were invited om a nearby asylum center. Soon everybody were dancing, and the atmosphere was just amazing. It struck me, that on this evening there was no difference between Danes and asylum seekers, or band and audience for that matter. We were just happy to be together. That’s what music can do.”

Feridah released the EP ‘Game of Love’ in 2012 which showcased her powerful voice and range. is was followed up with the single ‘Kyelondela’ – a tribute to her homeland recorded back in Uganda with one of the country’s most popular songwriters, Sylver Kyagulanyi and the legendary local hit maker Paddy Man behind the desk. It was the first song she sang in her mother tongue and set the direction for her 2017 release ‘Njalaba’ where she fuses her influences both musically and lyrically into a sound with strong roots and a modern vision.

When asked about the writing process, she says: “When I sit down with a cup of tea and my notebook, a song can turn up from a single sentence or maybe just a feeling. I sing the tune into my phone, and later we develop it further in the studio.” Although Feridah often builds her songs from personal experiences, she hopes that listeners can relate to the authenticity and the intention behind them: “Perhaps you will hear something different than I, in the song. But it’s also perfectly fine, if it’s something that relates to your own life.”

23.00 - 00.00 Simon Spang-Hansen’s “Rainbow Spirit”

”Danish/African quartet plays a seductive mix of jazz and West-African music.”

It may sound like a cliché, but nevertheless it is a fact that the listener has a hard time maintaining
a hard-won, confined melancholia, and expanding lunar eclipse, while listening to this music of
African inspiration, Whether you want it or not you simply get in a good mood while listening to it.
Rainbow Spirit is not quite”pure” African music.”Rainbow Spirit” would be more of a mixture of European jazz and traditional west-African music. Gambian kora-player Dawda Jobarteh and Ghanese percussionist Ayi Solomon are central in the general sound picture, but so are the two Danes, Simon Spang-Hanssen on saxophones and flute and Thomas Fonnesbech on bass. This constellation- this Danish/African quartet- creates a unique, lively, refreshing and seductive musical expression, which both maintains the qualities of West-African tradition and develops it with a touch of Nordic jazz. Certainly, the music is simple, easy to listen to and sometimes even coy. But it also possesses depth, character and edge. And this makes it worthwhile listening to –again and again

This album will be promoted in our tour to europa 2017, where we will have the opportunity to attend festivals in Denmark, Hungary, among others. To make it a reality, we are presented with the opportunity to record in an excellent studio such as ESTUDIOS DEL SUR, as well as the option of copying and distributing our disc in physical and digital format, facilitating access to both physical and virtual music stores ( Portaldisc, Spotify, Itunes, among others). Having a quality material with content, as much in its music, its art and its projection to future, reason why your contribution becomes an immense aid for the development of our race. We will occupy the modality of "SALE IN GREEN". From this new composition process we have found many facets in our music such as: Vals, milonga, tango, rumba, chachacha, swing, jazz, among others. In our poetics we find things as colloquial as love, life, death, as well as the deep desire for social changes.

19.00 - 20.00 Moussa Diallo 4tet (Afro Pop) Mali/Gambia/DK

About Moussa Diallo - Bass player, singer and composer. Born February 17th 1955 in Paris, France. Brought up in Bamako, Mali and currently residing in Copenhagen, Denmark
In 1974, when fusion between western and traditional African music was still just a wish to be fulfilled, a young man from Mali found himself in Copenhagen with an electric bass. Moussa Diallo had left his native country to seek out possibilities in the far north. The oldest son of a Danish mother and a Malian father had already earned his first musical experiences playing in various bands in Mali.

On his arrival in Denmark the young bass player immediately captured the attention of the established Danish rock scene with his fierce, grooving and always convincing approach to his instrument. Throughout the '70s, '80s and '90s Moussa Diallo set fire to prominent Danish rock/fusion bands like Skunk Funk, Sneakers, Savage Rose and many others. He was also the leading rhythmical force when famed singer Anne Linnet formed her revolutionary band Marquis de Sade in 1983. Moussa Diallo was for 15 years an indispensable member of renown Danish singer/composer Hanne Boel’s group on stage as well as in the studio.

21.00 - 22.00 The 4th POWER (World Jazz), Gh/Brazil/Italy/Japan

In the spring of 2013, trumpet player, Alessandro Garau from Italy and bassist, Aurelio Raposo
from Brazil met for the first time in Copenhagen. They shared a common desire to write music, inspired by different cultures from the far corners of the world. Their chance arrived when they met the great percussionist from Ghana, Ayi Solomon. Solomon’swords, “Just play!” started off hours of jamming, where they heard new music in the air.

This was the beginning of their journey, where they started writing music with strong rhythmic drive and great melodic qualities. With the contemporary jazz pianist, Makiko Hirabayashi from Japan joining the band, adding beautiful harmonies and great soloing, the band was finally complete!
The music is colourful, original, and full of surprises, inspired by elements from flamenco,
Brazilian music, African rhythms, jazz, classical music, Italian melodies, and tango - “world fusion” in the true sense of the word. We hope you will enjoy The 4th Power and experience the power of its music.

19.00 - 20.00 Chico Matada Quartet (World Jazz) Mozambique/Dk

Chico Matada is a Mozambican born drummer, composer and recording artist who recently relocated in Helsinki. His music is drawn from a mix of in uences ranging from traditional and
contemporary African rhythms, to Nordic sounds and Jazz related music. In 2015, as a retrospect of his life experiences, Chico Matada decided to go to the studio to record his debut album called Reflections. The album has a contribution of musicians from Mozambique, Ghana, Afghanistan, Denmark, Sweden and Estonia resulting in a true composite of cultures, which is reflected in his music.Chico remains authentic to his origins, with African rhythms present in his music. This Album exhibits his unique approach to compose music with complex structures and fine use of improvisation, yet easy to listen for every music fan. The themes from Reflections, address issues that contemplate his aspiration of using music to inspire the listener to long for something beyond the present with a sense of wonder, yet with joy. His way of communicating sentiment in composition is like a litany to the Divine. Since moving to Denmark in 2010, Chico has performed and recorded with artists such as Chris Minh Doky, Andrew D'angelo, Deodato Siquir, Gimo Mendes, among other notable talents. Since graduate in jazz studies from the Royal Academy of Music Aarhus, Chico has been working extensively with his own project ”The Chico Matada Group.” and as a sideman playing concerts in Mozambique, Ghana, South Africa and around Europe. Alongside to performing Chico Matada is a music educator and have taught at Rudolf Steiner School, World Music Center, Den Kreative Skole, and Rudehøj Efterskole. But at the present time, he is devoting himself to his own music with the goal to mature the Group’s sound.

Tax Office, Ayi Solomon’s latest band, is a group of seasoned players who have been playing long enough to no longer have anything to prove. The members of Tax Office all contribute with original compositions to the band’s repertoire. Tax Office is leaning towards the funky side of the jazz-fusion equation!

Line up:
THOMAS WALBUM: KEYS
Thomas has toured the world extensively (Europe, Japan, Brazil, China, Australia, USA), searching for collaborations with musicians from cultures quite different to his own. In 2001 he released his debut album ’Boston’, featuring drummer Joe Hunt and bassist John Lockwood. In 2009 Thomas toured Brazil with the Grammy nominated Brazilian group ’Sinequanon’. In 2010 the ‘Walbum/Maintz Brazilian Quintet’, featuring three Brazilian musicians, went on a Brazilian tour and recorded an album consisting of all original material. The album will be released in the summer of 2012. He has toured Japan four times with his own trio and with the Pekka Pylkkänen Quartet.

Ida Gormsen: bass
Ida is self taught and has been living as a freelance musician for almost two decades. Ida has been staying in various places in Scandinavia and for some years in Ghana and South Africa. Her African roots have given her a unique sense of groove. Ida is a versatile musician and has always enjoyed playing various styles - taking inspiration from one to another- both when composing and playing. She has been playing with numerous Scandinavian and International musicians and has initiated many musical and intercultural projects mixing musicians from Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Ida loves being a band leader of her own projects but as much she enjoys creating a steady base for everyone else in the band to lean on; a role she believes is the essence and the all-pervading challenge of being a bass player.

PELLE FRIDELL: SAX’ES
A native swede residenting in Copenhagen since 1993. In Denmark he has become a high demanded reed player, both as a soloist and a session musician. He has collaborated in concerts and performances with composers, artists and groups such as: Toots Thielemans, Randy Brecker, Charlie Watts, Tom Waits, Ivan Lins, Angelique Kidjo, Georgie Fame, DR Big Band, Geir Lysne, Chris Potter, Michael Mantler a.o. Pelle’s main instruments are the tenor- and soprano- saxophone, and the flute, but he also plays the alto- and baritone- sax, the clarinet, alto and piccolo flutes and the bass clarinet. His second solo CD, Works Ahead, was released in the spring 2008. Two CD’s are coming in the near future, “Essence” with trumpet player Gerard Presencer, and “More Go Jaz” an up-follower to Go Jaz (2002).

SØREN LEE: GUITARS
”The music reached it’s max, when Søren got down to business, all aesthetic considerations were ignored, and the music turned into flesh and blood...” (Politiken). Søren has released three albums as a leader, featuring musicians like Ray Brown, Alvin Queen, Niels Lan Doky, Thomas Clausen, Adam Nussbaum, Jesper Lundgaard, Mads Vinding ao. He has performed at many of the most legendary clubs such as Village Vanguard, Knitting Factory, Village Gate and at numerous festivals around the world. Søren contributes with many compositions to TAX OFFICE.

AYI SOLOMON: PERCUSSION
Ayi Solomon is working and has played with some of the following musicians and groups: Moussa Diallo, Palle Mikkelborg, Klaus Mentzer, Mikkel Nordsø, John Tchicai, Yusef Lateef, Adam Rudorf, Simon Spang Hansen, Hugo Rasmussen, Dalia Faitelson’s Global Sound with Jerry Bergonzi, Randy Brecker, Adam Nussbaum, Chris Cheek, Lelo Nika and Thommy Andersson. The first one ”BACK HOME” his debut CD, released on cope records.(DK) The majority of the compositions are Solomon’s, and besides being featured as a percussionist he also handles the vocals. The music, which is hard to put a label on, can best be described as a fusion between African (modern and roots), jazz, pop, rap and funk with a spice of electronic additions.

17.00 - 18.00 Engolf (DK)

Engolf can be one of two things; a peculiar way of spelling a somewhat popular Danish boy name or the name of a somewhat popular group of amateur musicians performing at CafÈ Le Rouge during the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2017. If you are interested in the former, the rest of this text will not provide any new insights. However, if you want to know more about the band Engolf, you should carry on reading. Engolf's repertoire consists of the band's own compositions, which through the music and Danish lyrics create a universe of short stories with a number of peculiar characters. In the music, the characters interact through parties, love, deceit, on the run, blackmailing and executions. On the occasion of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival 2017, Engolf has modified the songs a bit and experimented with the instrumentation in order to give them a soft acoustic touch. The quirky, peculiar and poetic is explicit in Engolf's concerts, which are highly energetic, present, completely lack self irony but are filled with the joy of playing music

21.00 - 22.00 DUOMETRIC EVENTS (World/Impro) GH, DK

“Duometric Events” is - John Sund & Ayi Solomon

John Sund was born in Copenhagen. He is a self-taught guitarist, composer, arranger and producer. Main debut at age 18 with the Danish Radio Big Band in a work by pianist Thomas Clausen and with Palle Mikkelborg as a conductor. He received the Jacob Gade’s Grant as one of the first “rhythmic musicians” (which is normally reserved for classical musicians) for his extraordinary talent and Danish jazz reviewer, Boris Rabinowitsch, described him as a discovery of ‘Ørsted Pedersen’ske’ (NHØP) dimensions, reviewing his debut at Montmartre, Copenhagen.
He has since then appeared and recorded in countless context – including the Danish Radio Jazz Group, Danish Radio Workshop Group / Palle Mikkelborg, Thomas Clausen groups, Creme Fraiche Big Band, Debbie Cameron, Vincent Nilsson, Lelo Nika, Ben Besiakov, Bo Stief, Tim Hagans, the south Indian musicians Ganesh & Kumaresh, Shashank Subramaniam, Palestinian oud player Bilal Irshed and the Somali singer Mariam Mursal. John has toured most parts of the world. From 2005 to 2010 he visited china four times, where he was playing festivals and clubs (2005 and 2007) – touring with his band Acoustic Sense around different universities playing for students (2009) and in 2010 they performed at the EXPO world exhibition and Seaside Festival.
His own working groups includes: Acoustic Sense (formed 2002), with John Ehde (cello), Bent Clausen (vibraphone), Morten Lundsby (contrabass) and Yohanier Ramon (percussion) and World On A String (formed 2003), with Bjarke Falgren (violin/co- leader), Morten Lundsby (bass) and Mirwais Fedai (tabla). Works also as a freelance musician in many different contexts. In addition, he regularly dives into projects of a larger scale, such as recent projects like Acoustic Sense in a collaboration with the Bulgarian inspired vocal ensemble GLAS entitled Reaching Out or composing works of a larger scale for different classical constellations. Recent projects
includes SUND● SABRI● ROSE● FEDAI, with the north indian sarangi player Kamal Sabri, Danish classical singer Rose Svastha and the young tabla player Mirwais Fedai, world- music ensemble Global Tunes led by the Palestinian oud player Bilal Irshed, a trio collaboration with saxophonist Morten Carlsen and Cuban percussionist Yohan Ramon. Moreover working in the studio with Danish/British prog. rock king Robin Taylor, collaborations with “roots percussionist” Sylvester Agbedoglo from Togo and the exiting duo Duometric Events with the imaginative ghanian percussionist Ayi Solomon – to name a few. John Sund musical work moves in the borderland between jazz and world music with influences from classical music and is always in a constant search for new expressions and directions.
